Backlash – A “play” between gears
Backlash, sometime called “play” or “clearance” is necessary function for gearing. Though most machine designers think backlash is not desiable as it disturbs their ideal design. However in fact, proper backlash are necesasry to prevent damage due to lack of lublication. In addition, as every gear has deviations, noise and oscilation happen when gearing. Backlash is necessary to reduce noise and oscilation caused by gear deviations as backlash somewhat absorb such deviations. (PDF : “Backlash” from KG Technical Data)

On the other hand, demands for zero-backlash still exist. To meet such demands, we standardized Anti-backlash spur gears which can not remove backlash completely though, but can minimize backlash. Our Anti-backlash spur gears adopted time-honored method. Mechanism of Anti-backlash spur gear has built-in springs that pull each other between gear A and B to pinch the mating gear like a scissors. When rotated direction of the gear is reversible, the springs of Anti-backlash spur gear can continue to maintain suitable torque by pinching mating gear.If interference occurs due to gear quality, Anti-backlash spur gear with gear A and B absorbs the interference by stretching the spring mechanism while engaged between Anti-backlash spur gear and mating gear.

Mechanism of Anti Backlash Spur Gears

ASG type Method of ASG series is to loosen the bolts, then adjust gear A and B. This adjustment will allows to slip gear A and B into the match gear at a minimum backlash. This ASG series is only suitable for application that needs minimal backlash adjustment and the match gear needs to be high quality.
BS type Method of BS series is using a Circular Arc Spring to place between gear A and B in order to eliminate the backlash. BS series gears are allowable for low torque application.
BW type Method of BW series is the spring suspension of gear A and B.
The tension of spring will allow them to slip relatively to each other by the force.
This method will eliminate the backlash once gear A and B engage with the match gear.
